Myth or Fact?

We have compiled a list of strange (and often hilarious) ideas that some people have about Keene. Each of the myths is listed along with the actual facts that refute it. We think you'll agree that this is one case where fiction is much stranger than fact!

Keene was founded in 1892 by individuals of the Seventh-day Adventist Christian faith who had a vision for a community with values. While Seventh-day Adventists have beliefs established for their denomination, the City of Keene has no ordinances that enforce religious beliefs or practices.

Myth: Citizens can't mow their lawns on Saturday

Fact: There are no ordinances in the City of Keene that prohibit mowing on any day of the week.

Myth: Smoking is illegal

Fact: Keene has no ordinances that prohibit smoking. However, state law makes it clear that smoking is illegal for those under 18 years of age. Like any other city cigarettes are sold in Keene.

Myth: Everything closes at 8:00 PM

Fact: Like anywhere else, businesses in Keene determine their hours of operation. The city does not dictate them.

Myth: No businesses are open on Saturday

Fact: No ordinances prohibit businesses from operating on any day of the week. There are businesses in Keene that are open on Saturday.

Myth: You can't eat meat, especially pork

Fact: Not true. No ordinances exist that dictate what an individual may eat.

Myth: Drinking alcohol is illegal

Fact: No city ordinances prohibit your right to drink alcohol.

Myth: Police officers don't carry guns

Fact: Like any other law enforcement agency, Keene Police officers carry guns for your protection.

Myth: Only Seventh-day Adventists live in Keene

Fact: Keene welcomes diversity. Seventh-day Adventists, Baptists, and many other religious faiths are represented in Keene by fine citizens.

Myth: You can't barbecue outdoors on Friday evening or Saturday

Fact: No ordinances exist that prohibit any social activity from occurring on Fridays, Saturdays, or any other day.
